First of all, I don't believe in the toxic notion that children are born inherently evil or they are the spawn of Satan unless they are Damien from Omen.

Chi is weird, antisocial, she is unpredictable, she has violent outlashing that needs professional help which obviously she never got. You can see how she lives. How her parents live. In filth and poverty. But aside from that she is an ugly spot in the town environment that bugs (haha) general people's comfort zone, she doesn't care about hurting anyone for the sake of hurting. When you see her entering into the school to show off her dead bug collection, she didn't care about freaking out the class (that was just a collateral damage). She wanted to show a pretty one for her former best friend, Yuua. And then she disappeared.

Okay, I know what you are thinking. Brining general disturbance to your environment is against the law. But the problem is, that when you look at people with neurodivergent conditions, you want to compare their behavior to normalcy and you want to compare their moral compass to the sociaetal moral compass everyone agree (everyone who agrees to live and work together in a society).

If you think about it, she doesn't look for living bugs to kill. She looks for already dead ones and she decorates her clothes with dead bugs. The bird she mutilated? It was probably already a dead one. I think Chi is fascinated by dead things. You never get an asnwer why, but the whole manga is full of these death motives.

The problem started when this Koudai - all smily and enthusiastic - suddenly made his mission to reintegrate Chi back to the class, and because he knew the Chi and Yuua used to be friends he forced Yuua to help him. This kid is desperate people-pleaser. He wants adoration and love, he wants praises, he works hard to get those praises and he creates opportunities to get more praises. People will be proud of him. And when Chi actually appears at class? He snatch away all the credit all for himself. He did it. Alone. And crying from happiness.

And I think the reason Chi attacked him first with the scissors - aside from that very important tiny fact that Koudai is not Yuua -, because she saw through him. I don't think Chi has the words for it, why she hates Koudai, but you can see from the start that she hates him, because no matter how hard Koudai tried to impress her, Chi rejected her everytime, until Chi actually lost her patience and hurt him. I don't know if Chi considers herself evil (everyone else definitely considers HER evil) but one fucked up kid recognizes another fucked up one.

The sketchbook chapter is a very decisive scene about Chi's real character or intensions. In my interpretation I don't think she truly wanted to cause harm. I think she loves Yuua. Probably the only person she loves. And she didn't cause disturbance, she didn't bother anyone else in the class, just sit silently beside Yuua and they shared classbooks together. She was calm until Koudai or everyone else didn't try to butt in again.

The reason is much more simply why she ruined the sketchbook: it IS easy to ruin paper with a mechanical pencil if you don't know how to hold it properly, and I don't think Chi can hold a pencil. How to write. How to draw. How much pressure you have to apply. Her movements are like a toddler's in this scene.
And everyone around them turned hostile. When she got called out for her "mean behavior", THEN she gets violent toward a classmate, injuring Yuua in the process too.

I have so many thoughts about this story, because Yuua is so relatable but boy... Koudai needs help too. I feel sorry for everyone.

Damn, grooming your own child to be dependent physically and emotionally solely on you, and making him unable to form meaningful relationships, friendships, just to say to him that you will abandon him one day, because disappearing is the only thing you have control over. Damn.

Why are you doing this to me.
