We’ll still be bottom of the pile whoever runs the show.”

I feel you, Birhan from the bottom of my own heart.
EDIT:
Birhan panics and wants to drive away Etain, but Jinarts prevents it by saying that he shouldn't make enemies of the Jedi and Jinart even touches a soft spot: The Jedi can use their Force powers to nurture plants. And this works. It seems Birhan tries to think about long-term plans, maybe in hope, that there is life outside of this life poverty, neverending-work with no benefit. If he makes the right decision RIGHT NOW by not giving up on Etain, then maybe he will gain potential help in the future.
And I think tis is very interesting paralel between Birhan and Darman. Darman lives in his short-sigthed soldier life but tried to break through his conditioning. And the farmer, Birhan tried to break through his own short-sightedness. If you think about, when your very basic needs aren't met (no safety, no stability, no food, your life is in constant peril), you don't have space for caring about others either.
Both Darman and Birhan thought about long-term investsments when helping to people. But I think it's more than that. It's compassion, hid behind layers and layers of logic and practicality.
