I really love how the book already started with Anakin's POV and we get to see his daily life of as a slave. Unconsciously he uses the Force to survive Watto and his abusive behavior, but also for sensing people's intention which helps him to get good deals with other traders. He is written as a child who is forced into adult role, and he only gets to behave like his age, when nobody sees him, not even his Mom. He is wise, and he is very responsible.

But this behaviour is also the sign of constantly being in survival mode. Something that is just not enough for a true adult life. Anakin knows how to please people enough so they won't hurt him or his mother, but this skill is useless when you are suddenly find yourself in a safe environment (the Jedi temple for instance). It could be an explanation why Anakin is so reckless as an adult. His life is no longer threatened but he just doesn't know what it feels like safety, so he try to find situations where his brain can reward him: You survived this. You deserve to live another day.

Now this chapter also mentions something else: his relationship with the tuskens. Anakin didn't hate tuskens before, he actually found them very cool for their lawless lifestyle and from his point of view, they seem to live in a community were everyone is equal. Instead of going straight home from a successful trade, he went for the canyons (which I think was a Force suggestion) and he encountered a wounded tusken who fell down from the cliff. Anakin tended the wounds despite not knowing how the Tusken will react, but he sensed his fear. And when the tribe came for their wounded, they didn't hurt Anakin either.

There were also forshadowing for the the later scenes in AoTC and his mother. He doesn't fear for his own life, he is always standing firmly even against Watto, but he already is in dread what will happen if his mother won't be around.

But as for now, he is truly compassionate and kind. He knows what is the right thing to do. 10 years is a lot between the events of TPM and AOTC, I wonder where exactly started to lost his way.
