Now he was worried that he—the sergeant, the man they looked to for leadership—had run for it without thinking of them, and that they knew it.

Indeed! This whole progression how Omega Squad becomes a team and how Niner truly fits into this leadership position. Niner is very couragous, so his anxiety never actually gets in the way of getting shit done. He is such a rolemodel for this, honestly.
